{"id":5202,"date":"2020-10-01T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idc-cdi.com\/staging\/resolution-on-promoting-solidarity\/"},"modified":"2020-10-01T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T09:00:00","slug":"resolution-on-promoting-solidarity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idc-cdi.com\/staging\/resolution-on-promoting-solidarity\/","title":{"rendered":"Resolution on promoting solidarity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Executive Committee Videoconference 01\/10\/2020.<\/p>\n<p>Resolution on promoting solidarity and respect among the<br \/>\ndiverse people, cultures and nations of the world <\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Recognizing the widespread social isolation, economic hardship, despair, fear and anger triggered by<br \/>\nthe COVID-19 crisis in societies across the globe;<br \/>\n\u25cf Humbled by an awareness of our collective responsibility to this and future generations, and realizing<br \/>\nthat our actions today will shape the future, for good or ill;<br \/>\n\u25cf Realizing that some of the most profound advances in the human condition emerged in response to<br \/>\nsevere crises, including the horrors of pandemic, war and grave historical injustices, such as genocide<br \/>\nand slavery, whose consequences continue to haunt us to the present day;<br \/>\n\u25cf Affirming that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) represents a significant<br \/>\ncontribution to the development of shared civilizational values that may unite the diverse people,<br \/>\nnations and cultures of the world;<br \/>\n\u25cf Recalling that Western humanism and Christian democracy played a vital role in rebuilding Europe<br \/>\nafter the Second World War and in establishing the European Community;<br \/>\n\u25cf Lauding the historic role of St.<\/p>\n<p>Pope John XXIII, Jules Isaac, Jacques Maritain, John Courtney Murray<br \/>\nand other spiritual and intellectual luminaries in shaping the Second Vatican Council, including its<br \/>\nteaching on religious freedom (Dignitatis humanae) and on relations between different religious<br \/>\ncommunities (Nostrae aetate);<br \/>\n\u25cf Acknowledging the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Department of State\u2019s Report of the Commission on Unalienable Rights and<br \/>\nits re-affirmation of the spirit and substance of fundamental human rights, including those articulated<br \/>\nby UDHR;<br \/>\n\u25cf Recognizing that the universal values and aspirations expressed in these documents have long been<br \/>\narticulated and embraced by the world\u2019s great cultural, religious and ethical traditions;<br \/>\n\u25cf Noting that the 6th-century BCE Tao Te Ching conveys a profound apprehension of the \u201cWay\u201d and<br \/>\nhow it is expressed through virtue, including humility, mercy and justice;<br \/>\n\u25cf Acknowledging that Ashoka\u2019s Edicts, created in 3rd-century BCE India, sprang from the aspiration to<br \/>\ndevelop a society characterized by dharma, including universal compassion, justice and respect for<br \/>\nthe inherent dignity of all human beings;<br \/>\n\u25cf Recognizing that the foundational texts of the Humanitarian Islam movement represent a<br \/>\ncomprehensive affirmation of these universal values from within the Islamic tradition, including the<br \/>\nprinciple of rahmah (universal love and compassion);<br \/>\n\u25cf Recalling the Document on Human Fraternity, signed by Pope Francis and Shaykh Ahmed el-Tayyeb<br \/>\nof al-Azhar, which urges human beings to live a dignified and virtuous life by embracing a spirit of<br \/>\nuniversal brotherhood and treating others with love and respect;   <\/p>\n<p>Executive Committee Videoconference 01\/10\/2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Considering that these teachings originated among diverse cultures over thousands of years; embody<br \/>\nthe collective wisdom of humanity; reflect its aspiration to live in dignity and freedom; and<br \/>\nunderscore the need for societies to embrace universal ethics and humanitarian values if they are to<br \/>\navoid repeating the cataclysms of the past;<br \/>\n\u25cf Discerning that hatred of others\u2014whether based upon ethnic, religious or ideological \u201ctribalism\u201d\u2014<br \/>\nis inimical to virtue and noble character, which represent the only secure foundation upon which to<br \/>\nbuild a peaceful and prosperous global civilization;<br \/>\n\u25cf Realizing that scientific, technological and economic progress have brought civilization to our present<br \/>\ncross-roads, with greater opportunity for advancement\u2014or mass destruction\u2014than ever before;<br \/>\n\u25cf Anticipating that the 21st century may witness the emergence of a truly global civilization, which<br \/>\noffers an unprecedented opportunity for people of every faith and nation to cooperate in building a<br \/>\nbetter life for themselves and their children;<br \/>\n\u25cf Concluding that in order to fulfill the promise of a just and noble civilization, we must promote<br \/>\nsolidarity and respect among the diverse people, cultures and nations of the world, so that the innate<br \/>\nhuman will to dominate others\u2014and the threat of tyranny posed by the nexus of dogmatism, political<br \/>\nand economic power, and technology\u2014do not lead, instead, to the dystopian future anticipated by<br \/>\nGeorge Orwell in his novel 1984, with its memorable image of \u201ca boot stamping on a human face\u2014<br \/>\nforever\u201d;<br \/>\nThe CDI states the following:<br \/>\n\u25cf We call upon governments and civil society institutions to join in promoting solidarity and respect<br \/>\namong the diverse people, cultures and nations of the world;<br \/>\n\u25cf We note that political and ideological polarization tends to create a false dichotomy between<br \/>\n\u201cconserving\u201d and \u201cprogressing,\u201d when in fact these principles are intrinsically symbiotic by nature<br \/>\nand essential to human flourishing;<br \/>\n\u25cf We urge opinion leaders in the fields of religion, education, popular culture, government, business<br \/>\nand the media to advocate and promote the spirit of cooperation rather than conflict, within and<br \/>\nbetween civilizations;<br \/>\n\u25cf We recommend that dialogue among the world\u2019s diverse peoples, cultures and religions employ the<br \/>\nprinciple of \u201cthe highest common denominator,\u201d founded upon the noblest aspirations of every<br \/>\ncivilization;<br \/>\n\u25cf We resolve to build and bequeath to future generations a global civilization whose constituent<br \/>\nelements retain their distinctive characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>To emerge and flourish, such a civilization must<br \/>\nrespect the equal rights and dignity of every human being and embody the principle of \u201charmony and<br \/>\nunity amid diversity,\u201d as expressed in the mottos of the European Union (In varietate concordia) and<br \/>\nthe Republic of Indonesia (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika).&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Executive Committee Videoconference 01\/10\/2020.
