“Resolution on the poisoning of Alexei Navalny
The IDC-CDI deplores the poisoning of the Russian opponent Alexei Navalny on August 20,
2020 in the city of Tomsk and repudiates the violent and inhuman strategies that seek to
silence brave citizens who denounce corruption and fight for democracy in Russia.
The
confirmation by independent laboratories in Germany, France and Sweden that a chemical
weapon such as the nerve agent novichok has once again been used to silence potential
threats to the Russian regime requires a strong response from the international community.
In this context, the IDC Executive Committee:
–
supports an international investigation with the participation of the United Nations, the
Council of Europe and the European Union that seeks to clarify the poisoning of Alexei
Navalny;
–
requires the Russian authorities to cooperate with the investigations in order to identify
those responsible for this attempted murder;
–
supports the proponents of the drawing up of Magnitsky legislation at European level, to
allow for the sanctioning of foreign individuals involved in cases of corruption and human
rights violations;
–
recognizes that, in this context, the continuation of the North Stream 2 project shall be
discussed until Russia abandons its aggressive international foreign policy;
–
wishes Alexei Navalny a speedy and complete recovery and hopes he will continue to
contribute to the construction of a democratic Russia that promotes international peace.
Executive Committee Meeting videoconference 01/10/2020.”
