On June 28 and 29 we held the second annual meeting at the European Parliament in Brussels, with the presence of more than 33 parties from 30 countries, from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. [two-col background=”true”]

The President of the IDU, Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada, as well as the Secretary General, Christian Kattner, were invited to participate in this meeting, as part of a new collaboration programme between the two international organizations. At the meeting, together with the President of the IDC-CDI, Andrés Pastrana, an important joint declaration on Moldova was signed. It was an important and very eventful meeting, where timely and relevant political issues were discussed. Several resolutions on Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Mexico and Bangladesh were approved, which you can view on this website in the Documents and Resolutions section. Following the proposal by the last Executive Committee in Budapest, the statutes of the IDC-CDI’s youth organization were presented at this meeting, which we hope to have definitively in place by the next meeting in November, and to begin work on a women’s organization, which we are reviving after being inactive for some time. Two African parties were accepted as full members: the UDR, Unión pour la Republique et la Democratie of Mali, and the Malagasy Miara Miainga party of Madagascar. Also accepted was the BNP, Bangladesh National Party in that country. We continue to expand our activity on the African Continent, with 26 member parties; and in Asia, where we expect a major presence soon. The delegate of Cambodia’s PPC party, Yara Suos, a very active person in our organization, was unanimously appointed to the vacant vice-presidency upon the death of Edgardo Angara of the Philippines. The next meeting will be on November 22 and 23 on the island of Sal, in Cape Verde. [/two-col]
