From 3 to 5 December General Coordinator Alberto Ruiz Thiery, on behalf of the IDC-CDI, attended the 12th Congress of our party, Unita, in Angola, with the event practically coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its foundation, which will be observed next year. At the Congress the party’s new officials, and its President, were elected for a four-year term. The event was held at the party’s facilities in Luanda, with more than 1,2000 delegates from across the country attending and participating, who voted for the party’s presidential candidates and other elected officials. The debates and various speeches by representatives of all the Angolan parties, and the member parties of the IDC-CDI that attended, were of great interest and received broad media coverage. Three candidates ran for President of the party. Winning by a very large majority, with more than 80 percent of the vote, was the incumbent Isaias Samakuva. President Samakuva, also vice-president of the IDC-CDI, was named at the Leaders’ Meeting held in Mexico last July, and is also a member of the Executive Committee of the IDC Africa regional organization.
