In November and December some 50 municipalities held local and mayoral elections in Mozambique.
Our member party, the MDM (Democratic Movement of Mozambique), emerged the moral victor in these elections, for which we congratulate its Chairman, Daviz Simango and the entire party on the results attained.
The MDM was victorious in three of the country’s four largest cities, with results far exceeding supermajorities. In the capital, Maputo, the results were excellent, with 40 percent of the vote, despite being the first time the party ran in the city.
In other smaller cities outstanding results were also obtained, with the MDM just dozens of votes from victory in some.
In some localities there were serious questions as to the transparency in the vote counts and the publication of the results. Though in this regard the latest elections saw improvement relative to previous ones, work still remains to be done in this area.
The IDC congratulates the MDM party for its work and the success achieved in these recent elections, and encourages it to continue supporting and working for democracy in Mozambique, for the benefit of all citizens.
