The IDC-CDI vigorously condemns the attacks carried out yesterday by mobs of fanatical followers of the government of Nicolás Maduro against the Legislative National Assembly, the last bastion and symbol of Venezuelan Democracy, which is ailing in the face of violence assaults unleashed against it by the dictatorship’s henchmen.

As a voice for democratic parties of the center and center-right, we express our absolute solidarity with the admirable Venezuelan people, who, despite the repression and gunfire in the streets, have demonstrated a heroic spirit, evoking the country’s historic fight for liberty during another era, as they manifest their rejection of a regime seeking to enslave him.

We call on the free governments around the world to take effective measures to protect the life, democracy and freedom of the Venezuelan people, within the parameters established by international law. We cannot remain indifferent while Leopoldo López and many other dissidents are made martyrs, being tortured in the regime’s jails.

It is time to act without fear, and without delay. The cause of the Venezuelan people is our own.
